Retrofit Overview
This project focuses on transforming a post‑war bungalow into a highly energy‑efficient, sustainable, and comfortable modern home. The retrofit followed a whole‑house approach, ensuring every upgrade—from insulation to renewables—was carried out in a logical sequence for maximum long‑term performance.
Key improvements included upgraded insulation, high‑performance windows, enhanced ventilation, and the introduction of innovative renewable energy solutions. Central to the design was the owners’ ambition to achieve a striking contemporary look while maintaining a sensible budget.
Design Vision
To reinvent the bungalow’s appearance and performance, the proposals featured:
- A raised roof finished with metal cladding that incorporates integrated solar technology
- Siberian Larch cladding for a warm, natural aesthetic
- External wall insulation finished with a durable render
- Extensive high‑performance glazing to maximise natural light
Rather than traditional photovoltaic panels mounted on a roof, the owners selected a pioneering flexible, peel‑and‑stick photovoltaic system. Applied directly to the metal roof, these solar cells are virtually invisible, creating a clean, streamlined architectural finish.
The completed design gives the bungalow a refined, contemporary character while enhancing individuality and raising the design standard for the surrounding area. All materials were chosen for durability, sustainability, and long‑term performance. The overall effect is subtle yet modern, combining energy efficiency with environmental sensitivity.
Planning Principles
The project aligns with the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), including:
- Section 7, Paragraph 60: Planning decisions should avoid imposing prescriptive architectural styles and should support innovation, originality, and design initiative while respecting local distinctiveness.
- Paragraph 63: Exceptional and innovative designs that raise the overall standard of an area should be afforded significant weight during planning assessments.
This retrofit embodies these principles by uniting advanced technology with a design approach that enhances local character.
Key Discoveries and Design Revisions
Several findings during the development phase prompted refinements to the initial design:
- Roofing Material Change: A natural slate roof with integrated solar tiles was originally proposed, but the cost was almost double that of standard solar panels and did not deliver the desired aesthetic. This led to the adoption of the metal roof with discreet flexible solar cells.
- Optimising Internal Space: A covered balcony was removed to expand the floor area within the master bedroom.
- Energy Strategy Adjustments: External solar shading originally intended to reduce solar gain was replaced with energy‑efficient air‑conditioning units more aligned with the clients' needs.
- Structural Upgrades: Rotten first‑floor joists were discovered and replaced with open‑lattice joists, improving structural performance and offering greater design flexibility.
